BIO-OLEA Project
Bio-Olea is a two-year project addressed to the study of the recovery and utilization of biophenols from Olea Europea products. The objectives of the project are summarised as follows:
• to obtain bioactive ingredients enriched in phenolic compounds from olive mill waste water (OMWW) using multiple filtration steps (micro, ultra, nano and inverse osmosis);
• to formulate these ingredients obtaining stable powder and test the products using an array of in vitro assay for possible cosmetic applications;
• to isolate and characterize yeasts and lactic acid bacteria for the fermentation process of table olives;
• to explore the antimicrobial activities of OMWW phenolic compounds;
• to investigate the processing conditions in order to obtain virgin olive oil (VOO) with optimum quality characteristics.
Bio-Olea aims to create a platform to increase international awareness about the work performed by Mediterreanen research institutions and to promote networking activities and transfer of knowledge and best practices.
